February 2012 – a new role at the University of Oxford
Helen was delighted to be asked to be a guest lecturer for Oxford University’s Undergraduate Diploma in Environmental Conservation on February 4 2012. Running a half-day course on writing about conservation issues for a variety of media, Helen explored the subjects of creating headlines, using descriptive language and the anatomy of an article with the students. She is looking forward to marking the subsequent assignments later in the year and hopes to continue the workshop with future groups.

January 2012 – UK National Ecosystem Assessment online
The UK National Ecosystem Assessment (UK NEA) is the first scientific analysis of the UK’s natural environment in terms of the benefits it provides to society and the economy. Designed to provide decision-makers with information about our ecosystems, it presents the most up-to-date thinking on the state of the country’s habitats and wildlife, and their impacts on our own quality of life. Complied by the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), the UK NEA can now be viewed online and will soon be available as a book. The production of the document was overseen by NatureBureau and Helen was involved in sub-editing it and illustrating graphics.

January 2012 – introducing wildlife photography to Overton Photo Club
On January 13 2012, Helen visited Overton Photographic Club to provide a talk on the elements of wildlife photography – everything from where to go to see wildlife to what equipment suits the job best. Showing some of her best examples of recent works, Helen was able to explain the principles of nature photography over the hour and a half talk. The evening went well, with many enthusiastic questions and comments, and everyone had a good time. If you’d like Helen to talk at your photo club or event, please do get in touch:
